چکیده

We show that a continuous set of degenerate critical soft modes strongly enhances the first-order character of a fluctuation-induced first-order transition in the pyrochlore dipolar Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Such a degeneracy seems essential to explain the strong first-order transition recently observed in Gd2Sn2O7. We present some evidence from Monte Carlo simulations and a perturbative renormalization group expansion.

Effective Hamiltonians for large-S pyrochlore antiferromagnet

The pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet has a massive classical ground state degeneracy. We summarize three approximation schemes, valid for large spin length S, to capture the (partial) lifting of this degeneracy when zero-point quantum fluctuations are taken into account; all three are related to analytic loop expansions. The first is harmonic order spin waves; at this order, there ...

Competition Between Exchange and Anisotropy in a Pyrochlore Ferromagnet

– The Ising-like spin ice model, with a macroscopically degenerate ground state, has been shown to be approximated by several real materials. Here we investigate a model related to spin ice, in which the Ising spins are replaced by classical Heisenberg spins. These populate a cubic pyrochlore lattice and are coupled to nearest neighbours by a ferromagnetic exchange term J and to the local 〈1, 1...

Effective Hamiltonian for the pyrochlore antiferromagnet: Semiclassical derivation and degeneracy

In the classical pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, there is a macroscopic continuous groundstate degeneracy. We study the semiclassical limit of large spin length S, keeping only the lowest-order in 1 /S correction to the classical Hamiltonian. We perform a detailed analysis of the spin-wave modes, and using a real-space loop expansion, we produce an effective Hamiltonian, in which...

Order by disorder and gaugelike degeneracy in a quantum pyrochlore antiferromagnet.

The (three-dimensional) pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with Heisenberg spins of large spin length S is a highly frustrated model with a macroscopic degeneracy of classical ground states. The zero-point energy of (harmonic-order) spin-wave fluctuations distinguishes a subset of these states. I derive an approximate but illuminating effective Hamiltonian, acting within the subspace of Ising s...
